About Basement Calculator

Our story
Basement Calculator was started in 2014 by Jason Keeley while he was finishing his own basement. Before picking up a single tool, he went looking for a reliable way to estimate what the project would cost and came up empty. The calculators he found were either too simple to trust or buried behind contractor lead forms.
So he built his own, alongside the project itself. Every stage of that basement, from framing and insulation to drywall, flooring and the final trim, fed real-world costs and hands-on lessons into the calculator. The result was an estimating tool shaped by someone who had actually priced the materials, hired the trades and done the work.
The site has been revised many times since then. Each update adds detail, reflects current material and labor prices, and makes the estimates more accurate, so the numbers you see here are built to hold up when the real bids come in.
What we do
Finishing, waterproofing or repairing a basement is one of the bigger checks a homeowner writes, and most people go into their first contractor meeting with no idea what a fair price looks like. Basement Calculator exists to close that gap. Our tools turn your basement’s size, condition, location and finish choices into a realistic, itemized budget, and our guides explain the decisions behind each line.
We are a publisher, not a contractor. We don’t sell construction services, and we don’t bid on your project. That lets us give you straight numbers and honest advice, including telling you when the cheaper fix is the right one.
How our estimates are built
- Current market pricing. Rates are based on national average material and installed-labor costs for 2026, drawn from published industry cost data, manufacturer pricing and contractor rate surveys.
- Adjusted for where you live. Labor varies far more than materials from region to region, so every calculator lets you scale costs for lower-cost areas and high-cost metros.
- Measured the way contractors measure. Walls, drains and trim are priced by linear or square foot of the surfaces involved, not just floor area, so estimates track the real scope of work.
- Nothing hidden. Permits, contingency and DIY trade-offs appear as separate lines, so you can see exactly where the money goes and which choices move the total.
- Reviewed regularly. We revisit our pricing as markets shift and update the calculators and guides when costs change.
Estimates are a planning tool, not a quote. Every basement is different, and site conditions only a professional can see in person will affect the final price. Use our numbers to set a budget and evaluate bids, then get at least three written quotes from licensed local contractors.

Our editorial standards
Every calculator and guide on this site is written to be accurate, practical and easy to act on. We explain costs in plain language, point out safety and code issues such as egress windows, permits and licensed trade work, and flag when a job is better left to a professional. When we learn that something is out of date or wrong, we fix it. If you spot an error, let us know.
How we keep the site free
Basement Calculator is free to use. We’re supported by advertising and by partner links. When you use a link to request quotes from local pros or buy a product we mention, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Partners never influence our estimates: the calculators produce the same numbers whether or not you click through, and we recommend what fits your project, including the options that don’t earn us anything.
